Since the Jewish religious leaders did not have the legal right to put someone to death, on Thursday they brought Jesus to Pilate, the Roman ruler. They riled up the crowds to ask for Jesus' crucifixion. Pilate saw that Jesus was innocent, but he ordered His death to please the crowd. He literally washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying he should not be held accountable of this innocent man's blood. That act of cowardice has earned him infamy through the ages.
