Boundaries: A Tale of Three Hearts
24x18 watercolor
matted and in a recycled frame
There is so much symbolism in this painting. Each heart is surrounded by a body of water, a natural but man tended hedge of some sort, and a wall.
To me, the water boundaries are boundaries that most of us are born with and share. The hedges are boundaries that people develop as they grow up. The walls are specific boundaries that people erect because of their experiences and relationships.
The heart on the left has closed himself off. He is guarded, withdrawn, cold.
The heart on the right over gives, never says no. She is overlooked and over extended.
The heart in the center trusts when it is earned, has a few very good relationships and is open to growing intimacy when it is reciprocated. This one has healthy boundaries.
